Wangi Wangi Bowling Club
The first bowls were rolled out at Wangi Bowling Club on Sunday 22 February 1959 with the official opening of the Clubhouse and eight rink green.
Seven years before that event the Wangi Bowling Club had been but a glint in the eye of four bowling stalwarts late of Cessnock Club, now resident in Wangi without a local green. Not a problem for men of the coal industry. They picked a spot near the power station that was currently under construction, “put in five bob each to cover the cost of correspondence etc” and set about establishing a local Club.
The site was swampland, so ashes and rubble from the power station were utilised to fill the site. However, there was excessive silt in the fill and the green refused to prosper. Subsequently 40 tons of beach sand was integrated into the fill and topped with soil from Mulbring. Much hard work down the track by volunteer members saw the finished couchgrass green.
Today the Club is prospering and building on the hard yards put in by our predecessors. Our two new synthetic greens recently installed by KCL Sports are in our opinion the best around and our 5 Grade Pennant Team, of which KCL is a proud sponsor.
